Ripley Town Hall Autumn Exhibition Report.

Autumn Exhibition 2014

The autumn exhibition took place at Ripley Town Hall on the weekend of 21st – 23rd November. There were 279 entries by 43 members, of which 180 were framed and 99 were mounted.

The primary aim of the exhibition is to showcase the diverse range of talents of the club members and the entries displayed a wide range of media and methods. The standard of work, once again, was very high and there were some notable contributions from newer members of the club. It was pleasing to see that most members had followed the notes sent out with the entry form and the quality of the framing was much improved. Despite some very positive and complimentary comments about the exhibition, sales were lower than in previous autumn exhibitions with 11 framed pictures and only 6 mounted pictures sold. 63 cards were sold, which is an improvement on previous years.

Framed Paintings sold were:

  • Rosemary Chapman – Autumn Warmth
  • Dulcie Darlington – The River Wharfe
  • Manchula Foulkes – Daffodils
  • Gwen Puckrin – Blossom on the Stray 1
  • Gwen Puckrin – Forget Me Not
  • Alison Ross – Poppies and Friends by a Wall
  • Elaine Shirtliff – Runswick Bay
  • Christine Spence – Autumn Leaves
  • Sheila Venamore – Asleep in the Sun
  • Ann Walker – A Winter Garden
  • Cynthia Wignall – Robin Hood’s Bay – August

Unframed paintings sold were:

  • Helen Cassidy – Snow Melt
  • Helen Cassidy – Onwards and Upwards
  • Gillian Dunsmore – Poppies
  • Muriel Illingworth – Three Boats
  • Jack Stancombe – Morning Light Royal Baths
  • Jack Stancombe – Crescent Gardens – Winter

The committee and all the club members would like to thank all those who helped to make the exhibition a success – those who helped set up the exhibition, erecting stands, booking-in pictures and hanging them and all the stewards who manned the hall over the weekend. Without the cheerful help of so many club members it would be very difficult to hold exhibitions of such a high standard. Special mention must be made of the following:

  • Elizabeth Noble for organising the exhibition
  • Chris Rushton for all the excellent advertising and publicity that he arranged for the exhibition
  • Dorothy Gerrard and Tricia for the stunning flower arrangements which were commented on by a number of visitors
  • Jackie Wiglesworth for organizing the raffle prizes
  • Chris Noble for masterminding the computer system
  • All the members of the exhibition sub-committee for taking on tasks so enthusiastically.

The whole process of putting on the exhibition went very smoothly and several people mentioned the high standard of the pictures on display. We look forward to another successful exhibition in the spring.

St Gemma’s Hospice – Exhibition and Sale of Art

Thursday 23rd October to Sunday 26th October 2014 St. Gemma’s Hospice Art Exhibition and Sale will be celebrating its 14th year in 2014 and visitors to the exhibition will be able to view and buy from a collection of over 900 paintings, photographs and pastels which will all be hung, mounted and framed. Prices range from just £20 to £800. A percentage of all the art sold is donated to St. Gemma’s Hospice and by having this commission the event has managed to raise an outstanding £200,000 for the Hospice since it began. With such a huge variety of art on display from professional and up and coming artists, there is a piece to suit everyone. Includes the Secret Art Exhibition of postcards: Over 400 postcard sized pieces of artwork have been created and donated to The Secret Art Project to be displayed at the Leeds Art Exhibition and are being auctioned online as part of a national campaign to raise Hospice awareness and funds for St Gemma’s Hospice. All artists were provided with blank A5 postcard to doodle on / paint / sketch, and asked to sign the reverse so that who created which piece can remain the secret. All postcards are being displayed at the Leeds Art Exhibition from Thu 23rd – Sun 26th October 2014. The auction will open online through eBay on Wed 22nd Oct and end at 8.00pm UTC on Friday 31st October 2014. This will give those who have seen the postcards at the exhibition an opportunity to bid on them immediately, whilst also leaving enough time for people who haven’t seen the art in person to bid.

Grayson Perry Exhibition

In “The Vanity of Small Differences”, Grayson Perry explores his fascination with taste and class. These six tapestries were created alongside the Channel 4, Bafta-winning documentary All in the Best Possible Taste with Grayson Perry (2012), in which Perry visited three very different regions of England, exploring the taste of the different social groups he encountered.
